Introduction

Few archaeological controversies in Turkey illustrate the dangers of missing evidence more clearly than the career of James Mellaart. A brilliant and influential archaeologist, Mellaart helped transform understanding of prehistoric Anatolia through excavations at sites such as Çatalhöyük and Hacılar. Yet decades after his greatest discoveries, questions emerged about a series of spectacular claims that depended almost entirely on his personal testimony. When researchers examined papers left in his London study after his death, they found evidence that he had created forged texts, draft inscriptions and fabricated “translations” of supposedly ancient documents. Those discoveries forced scholars to re-examine earlier mysteries, especially the famous Dorak treasure, whose existence had always rested on evidence that nobody else could verify.[Popular Archaeology]popular-archaeology.comjames mellaart pioneer and forgerPopular ArchaeologyJames Mellaart: Pioneer…..and ForgerOct 11, 2019 — James Mellaart (1925–2012) is one of the most dazzling researchers…

The story is not a simple tale of a fraudster fooling archaeology. Mellaart made genuine contributions that remain important today. The Dorak Treasure Story

The most famous example of Mellaart’s disappearing evidence was the so-called Dorak treasure. According to his account, he met a young woman named Anna Papastrati on a train travelling to İzmir. After noticing an unusual ancient bracelet, he was invited to inspect a remarkable collection of Early Bronze Age artefacts allegedly recovered from graves near the village of Dorak. He said he spent days studying the objects and making detailed drawings, but was forbidden from taking photographs.[Wikipedia]WikipediaDorak affairDorak affair

The story attracted enormous attention because the treasure appeared archaeologically significant. Mellaart published illustrations and descriptions that suggested a rich elite culture in western Anatolia during the third millennium BC. Yet there was a fundamental problem: no independent evidence existed beyond his drawings and notes. The artefacts themselves never entered a museum, no verified photographs surfaced, and the alleged owner could not be located. Investigators struggled to find the address Mellaart supplied for Papastrati, while Turkish authorities became increasingly suspicious about the origins of the objects.[Wikipedia]WikipediaDorak affairDorak affair

As the controversy grew, several explanations emerged:

  • The treasure was genuine but hidden because it had been excavated illegally.
  • Smugglers used Mellaart to give illicit artefacts an appearance of legitimacy.
  • The entire episode was invented.
  • Some combination of real artefacts and embellished storytelling lay behind the account.

None of these possibilities could be conclusively proved because the central evidence had vanished.[biblicalarchaeology.org]library.biblicalarchaeology.orgThe BAS Library The Dorak Affair, or The Girl on the TrainThe BAS LibraryThe Dorak Affair, or The Girl on the Train - The BAS LibraryAnna Papastrati was planted on the train to lure Mellaart to a…

Why People Believed the Story

The Dorak affair gained credibility partly because of who was telling it. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mellaart was already regarded as one of the leading specialists in Anatolian prehistory. His discoveries had repeatedly revealed important archaeological cultures that had previously been poorly understood. Readers therefore had reason to trust his professional judgement.[Popular Archaeology]popular-archaeology.comjames mellaart pioneer and forgerPopular ArchaeologyJames Mellaart: Pioneer…..and ForgerOct 11, 2019 — James Mellaart (1925–2012) is one of the most dazzling researchers…

His drawings also appeared highly detailed and archaeologically informed. To many observers, they looked less like fantasy than careful documentation. The problem was that drawings are not substitutes for artefacts. They cannot be independently tested, scientifically dated or re-examined by future researchers. Once the objects themselves disappeared, the drawings became the evidence, and the evidence depended entirely on the draughtsman.[Wikipedia]WikipediaDorak affairDorak affair

What His Papers Revealed After Death

For decades, the Dorak affair remained unresolved. The situation changed dramatically after Mellaart’s death in 2012.

In 2018, researchers granted access to materials in his former study reported finding extensive evidence that he had produced forged translations, draft inscriptions and supporting documents connected to supposed Late Bronze Age discoveries. Rather than merely preserving information from lost sources, the papers suggested that he had actively constructed evidence intended to support historical theories he favoured.[Luwian Studies]luwianstudies.orgjames mellaart forged documents throughout lifeLuwian StudiesJames Mellaart Forged Documents throughout His LifeFeb 28, 2018 — Last year, Luwian Studies received documents from the est…

Among the most controversial materials were alleged translations of ancient texts that no one else had seen. Investigators reported discovering drafts showing how these documents had been developed and rewritten in Mellaart’s own hand. According to their findings, some texts presented as ancient records were actually modern creations designed to fill gaps in the historical record.[Luwian Studies]luwianstudies.orgjames mellaart forged documents throughout lifeLuwian StudiesJames Mellaart Forged Documents throughout His LifeFeb 28, 2018 — Last year, Luwian Studies received documents from the est…

The revelations were especially damaging because they showed a pattern rather than a single questionable incident. Critics argued that Mellaart was not simply passing along dubious information from others. Instead, the evidence suggested he sometimes manufactured supporting documentation himself.[Luwian Studies]luwianstudies.orgjames mellaart forged documents throughout lifeLuwian StudiesJames Mellaart Forged Documents throughout His LifeFeb 28, 2018 — Last year, Luwian Studies received documents from the est…

The Debate Did Not End

Not every scholar accepted every allegation in the same way. Some researchers have argued that certain texts associated with Mellaart’s archives may still preserve genuine ancient material, even if his handling of the evidence was deeply problematic. Debate continues over specific inscriptions and documents linked to his papers.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netOpen source on researchgate.net.

What changed, however, was the burden of proof. Before 2018, supporters of disputed discoveries could point to Mellaart’s reputation and assume that missing evidence might eventually reappear. After the discovery of forged materials in his study, undocumented claims faced far greater scepticism.[Luwian Studies]luwianstudies.orgjames mellaart forged documents throughout lifeLuwian StudiesJames Mellaart Forged Documents throughout His LifeFeb 28, 2018 — Last year, Luwian Studies received documents from the est…

Why Undocumented Discoveries Became Impossible to Defend

The Mellaart controversy highlights a basic principle of archaeology: evidence must be available for others to inspect.

Modern archaeological practice relies heavily on provenance, excavation records, photographs, scientific analysis and peer scrutiny. A discovery that cannot be revisited or independently checked becomes increasingly fragile, regardless of who reports it. The Dorak treasure lacked those safeguards from the beginning. Later revelations about forged documents made that weakness impossible to ignore.[Wikipedia]WikipediaDorak affairDorak affair

Several warning signs now stand out:

  • The original objects were unavailable for examination.
  • Photographs never appeared despite promises that they existed.
  • Key witnesses could not be verified.
  • Important claims depended on private documents unavailable to other researchers.
  • Supporting evidence often surfaced only through Mellaart himself.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaDorak affairDorak affair

None of these points alone proves that every disputed object or text was fabricated. Together, however, they demonstrate why archaeology increasingly demands transparent documentation rather than reliance on authority.

A Cautionary Tale About Expertise

James Mellaart remains a paradoxical figure in the history of Turkish archaeology. His legitimate discoveries helped establish Anatolia as one of the world’s most important regions for understanding early civilisation. At the same time, the evidence uncovered after his death cast doubt on some of the most dramatic claims associated with his name.[Popular Archaeology]popular-archaeology.comjames mellaart pioneer and forgerPopular ArchaeologyJames Mellaart: Pioneer…..and ForgerOct 11, 2019 — James Mellaart (1925–2012) is one of the most dazzling researchers…

That combination explains why the story still circulates. It is not merely a mystery about a lost treasure or forged documents. It is a case study in how expertise can both illuminate the past and shield weak evidence from scrutiny. The Dorak treasure, the missing inscriptions and the disputed translations all point to the same lesson: when evidence disappears, trust alone is never enough.[Wikipedia]WikipediaDorak affairDorak affair
