Introduction

Pakistan’s ancient Gandhara region produced some of the most recognisable Buddhist art in the world: serene Buddhas carved in grey schist, narrative reliefs, monastery decorations and devotional sculptures created between roughly the first and fifth centuries CE. Their artistic quality and international appeal have made them highly desirable to collectors and museums. That demand has also created a less celebrated market: forged Gandharan antiquities.

Unlike a newspaper hoax or fabricated photograph, fake antiquities can remain convincing for decades. A forged sculpture may be carved from old stone, artificially weathered, given a plausible ownership history and then sold as a newly discovered masterpiece. The result is a persistent authenticity problem that affects collectors, museums, archaeologists and historians alike. Specialists increasingly warn that Gandharan forgeries have entered both private collections and respected institutions, complicating efforts to understand the genuine artistic history of ancient Pakistan.[Leiden University Staff]staff.universiteitleiden.nlLeiden University Staff Genuine or fake?Authentication of Gandhara sculptures20 Feb 2025 — In this lecture Saskia van Veen will discuss her findings regarding authenticity and t…

Why Gandharan Art Attracts Forgers

Several factors make Gandharan objects particularly attractive targets for forgery.

First, authentic Gandharan sculptures command high prices on the international antiquities market. Demand comes not only from collectors interested in Buddhist art but also from buyers attracted by Gandhara’s unusual fusion of South Asian, Central Asian and classical Mediterranean influences.[athena art foundation]athenaartfoundation.orgathena art foundationGandharan Art and AfghanistanGandharan sculptures were among the first to portray Buddha in human form, as allowed b…

Second, genuine Gandharan art displays considerable stylistic variety. Workshops operated across a large region that now spans parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, using different materials and artistic conventions. That diversity gives skilled forgers room to create objects that appear unusual without immediately looking impossible.[cvaonline.org]cvaonline.orgGandharan Art and the Classical World e bookGANDHARAN ART AND THE CLASSICAL WORLD15 Dec 2023 — Academic studies of Gandharan art and archaeology are increasingly being published onl…

Third, decades of looting and illicit excavation have disrupted archaeological records. When an object appears without secure documentation showing exactly where it was excavated, experts lose one of the strongest tools for verifying authenticity. A sculpture with no archaeological context may be genuine, looted, restored, heavily altered or entirely modern. Determining which can be difficult.[tandfonline.com]tandfonline.comTaylor & Francis OnlineFull article: The Affectual-Social Ecology of Cultural Artefactsby MS Khan · 2024 · Cited by 11 — The century-long…

Researchers and heritage specialists have repeatedly noted that local workshops have produced convincing replicas and outright counterfeits to satisfy market demand. Some are intended as souvenirs, while others are created specifically to enter the antiquities trade as supposedly ancient artefacts.[Academia]academia.eduOpen source on academia.edu.

How Forgers Make New Objects Look Ancient

The stereotype of a fake antiquity is a crude modern copy, but successful forgeries are often much more sophisticated.

A forger may imitate the iconography of known Gandharan sculptures, combining familiar features such as wavy hair, monastic robes and Buddhist symbols. Surface damage can be added deliberately to suggest centuries of wear. Artificial patinas, mineral deposits and staining may be applied to mimic burial conditions. In some cases, old stone or fragments of genuine ancient material are incorporated into a modern creation.[etd.library.emory.edu]etd.library.emory.eduFaking it: The Problem of Forgeries in Gandharan Art…by KK Srikureja · 2017 · Cited by 1 — This thesis evaluates claims made abo…

Another challenge is that Gandharan art itself was produced in workshops that repeated popular designs. Genuine sculptures often resemble one another. Forgers exploit this by creating objects that look broadly “Gandharan” rather than copying a specific known piece.

The most convincing fakes therefore succeed not because they are perfect, but because they fit expectations. They appear ancient enough, stylistically plausible enough and undocumented enough to avoid immediate rejection.

How Specialists Test Disputed Sculptures

Modern authentication rarely depends on a single clue. Instead, specialists combine art history, archaeology, conservation science and provenance research.

Looking for Stylistic Mistakes

Art historians examine carving techniques, proportions, clothing folds, facial features and iconographic details. Forgers sometimes combine motifs from different periods or regions in ways that would have been unlikely in antiquity. A sculpture may look impressive while containing subtle historical inconsistencies.[etd.library.emory.edu]etd.library.emory.eduFaking it: The Problem of Forgeries in Gandharan Art…by KK Srikureja · 2017 · Cited by 1 — This thesis evaluates claims made abo…

Studying Materials and Tool Marks

Conservators inspect stone composition, weathering patterns and traces of modern manufacture. Microscopic examination can reveal machine-cut marks, modern abrasives or artificial ageing techniques. Tool-mark analysis has become increasingly important in broader cultural-heritage investigations because manufacturing traces can survive even when surfaces are deliberately weathered.[The Art Newspaper]theartnewspaper.comglobal taskforce recovering stolen cultural heritageglobal taskforce recovering stolen cultural heritage

Following the Provenance Trail

Perhaps the most important question is often not “What does the sculpture look like?” but “Where did it come from?”

A documented history of excavation, ownership and export provides strong evidence of authenticity. Conversely, objects that suddenly appear on the market with vague stories about old collections raise suspicion. Museums increasingly devote significant resources to provenance research because forged and looted artefacts often share the same warning signs: missing documentation and unverifiable ownership histories.[National Gallery of Australia]nga.gov.aufrom the field pakistanfrom the field pakistan

When Experts Disagree

Authenticity disputes are not always settled quickly. Some Gandharan objects remain controversial years after entering collections.

A notable example emerged in 2007 when a group of antiquities was returned to Pakistan by US authorities. While officials regarded the objects as authentic, a prominent specialist publicly argued that one returned “Starving Buddha” sculpture was actually a modern fake. The disagreement illustrated a recurring problem in antiquities research: experts can reach different conclusions when evidence is incomplete and the object lacks a fully documented archaeological history.[The Art Newspaper]theartnewspaper.comThe Art Newspaper Starving Buddha sculpture returned to PakistanThe Art Newspaper Starving Buddha sculpture returned to Pakistan

Such disputes demonstrate why authenticity is often a matter of accumulating evidence rather than finding a single decisive test. Scientific analysis, stylistic study and provenance research may point in different directions, leaving room for continuing debate.

How Fakes Distort Museums and Scholarship

The damage caused by forged antiquities extends far beyond financial loss.

When a fake enters a museum collection, it can influence exhibitions, catalogues and academic research. Scholars may use the object to draw conclusions about ancient religious practices, artistic workshops or cultural connections. If the object is later exposed as modern, those interpretations may have to be reconsidered.[Leiden University Staff]staff.universiteitleiden.nlLeiden University Staff Genuine or fake?Authentication of Gandhara sculptures20 Feb 2025 — In this lecture Saskia van Veen will discuss her findings regarding authenticity and t…

The problem is especially serious in Gandharan studies because many surviving objects lack secure excavation records. Researchers already face challenges reconstructing the history of monasteries, trade routes and artistic influences. Introducing forged material into that evidence base creates further uncertainty.

Recent academic discussions have warned that the growing number of Gandharan forgeries risks “polluting” art-historical and cultural research by mixing modern creations with authentic ancient evidence.[Leiden University Staff]staff.universiteitleiden.nlLeiden University Staff Genuine or fake?Authentication of Gandhara sculptures20 Feb 2025 — In this lecture Saskia van Veen will discuss her findings regarding authenticity and t…

Museums also face reputational risks. Discovering that a celebrated sculpture is a forgery can undermine public confidence and force costly reassessments of collections.

The Wider Connection Between Forgery and Looting

In Pakistan, the fake-antiquities problem cannot be separated entirely from the illicit trade in genuine artefacts.

Gandharan sites have long been targeted by looters and smugglers because international demand creates opportunities for profit. Authorities have repeatedly intercepted shipments containing large numbers of suspected antiquities, some genuine and some fake. One reported seizure included hundreds of authentic objects alongside counterfeit material, illustrating how the two markets can overlap.[dawn.com]dawn.comHistory smuggled outHistory smuggled out

For investigators, this mixture creates additional difficulties. A shipment may contain authentic sculptures, modern copies, altered artefacts and fragments assembled into composite objects. Determining what is genuine becomes a forensic exercise rather than a simple classification.

Why the Problem Persists

The persistence of Gandharan forgeries reflects a basic reality of the antiquities market: demand often exceeds securely documented supply.

Collectors want rare objects. Museums seek significant acquisitions. Genuine Gandharan sculptures are scattered across the world and many have incomplete histories. Those conditions create opportunities for skilled forgers and make definitive authentication difficult.

The story therefore differs from a conventional hoax that is exposed and disappears. Gandharan forgery is an ongoing problem. Each disputed sculpture raises the same questions: Is it ancient or modern? What evidence supports that conclusion? And how much confidence should we place in an object whose past cannot be clearly traced?

For Pakistan’s Gandharan heritage, those questions matter because every forgery risks obscuring the genuine achievements of one of South Asia’s most important artistic traditions. Authentic artefacts reveal the history of a remarkable Buddhist civilisation. Fake ones reveal something different: the enduring power of money, prestige and belief to manufacture a convincing past.
