Introduction

Was the Liberian Greenbul ever a real species? For more than three decades, many ornithologists believed the answer was yes. Known scientifically as Phyllastrephus leucolepis, the Liberian Greenbul was described in 1985 from sightings in south-eastern Liberia and a single collected specimen. It appeared to be a rare forest bird found nowhere else on Earth. Yet repeated searches failed to find another confirmed example. When genetic testing finally became possible, researchers discovered that the bird was almost certainly not a separate species at all, but an unusual individual of the much more widespread Icterine Greenbul.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Taxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul PhyllastrephusTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…July 12, 2017 — 5 Jul 2017 — The Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…Published: July 12, 2017

Unlike a deliberate hoax, this was a case of sincere scientific error. It remains one of the most striking examples of how a plausible species classification can survive for decades before new evidence overturns it. In Liberia’s history of contested truths, the Liberian Greenbul demonstrates how even careful scientific judgement can be revised when better tools become available.

Why the Original Species Claim Seemed Credible

The story began in Liberia’s Cavalla Forest near the border with Côte d’Ivoire. During fieldwork in the early 1980s, German ornithologist Wulf Gatter observed several birds that resembled the common Icterine Greenbul but showed distinctive pale markings on the wings. One specimen was eventually collected in 1984 and became the basis for a formal species description the following year.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Taxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul PhyllastrephusTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…July 12, 2017 — 5 Jul 2017 — The Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…Published: July 12, 2017

At the time, the claim was not unreasonable. West African forests contain many poorly studied bird populations, and new species were still being described from the region. The supposed Liberian Greenbul differed from the Icterine Greenbul in a feature that taxonomists often use to separate species: visible plumage characteristics. The unusual white or yellowish spots on the flight feathers and wing coverts appeared consistent enough to suggest something more than ordinary variation.[African Bird Club]africanbirdclub.org2012 Liberian GreenbulAfrican Bird ClubLiberian Greenbul expedition 2013 Final report December…by B Phalan · 2013 · Cited by 5 — The Liberian Greenbul was d…

The species also fit a familiar conservation narrative. Many tropical forests contain highly localised birds with small populations. A rare bird known from only a handful of observations seemed entirely plausible, especially in a region where political instability and limited scientific access had left many areas under-studied.[African Bird Club]africanbirdclub.org2012 Liberian GreenbulAfrican Bird ClubLiberian Greenbul expedition 2013 Final report December…by B Phalan · 2013 · Cited by 5 — The Liberian Greenbul was d…

For years, therefore, the Liberian Greenbul occupied an uncertain but accepted place in bird taxonomy. It was not universally accepted without question, yet neither was there enough evidence to dismiss it.

The Search for a Second Specimen

The weakness in the original case was obvious: virtually all evidence depended on a single preserved specimen and a small number of field observations by the original discoverer. No other researcher managed to collect or confirm another example.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Taxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul PhyllastrephusTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…July 12, 2017 — 5 Jul 2017 — The Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…Published: July 12, 2017

As interest in rare birds grew, the Liberian Greenbul acquired an almost legendary reputation among ornithologists and birdwatchers. If it really existed as a distinct species, it would be one of Africa’s rarest songbirds. Conservationists worried that habitat loss in south-eastern Liberia might threaten a bird already known from only one location.[African Bird Club]africanbirdclub.org2012 Liberian GreenbulAfrican Bird ClubLiberian Greenbul expedition 2013 Final report December…by B Phalan · 2013 · Cited by 5 — The Liberian Greenbul was d…

Several expeditions specifically searched for it. Surveys examined the Cavalla Forest and neighbouring areas, hoping either to rediscover the bird or gather evidence about its ecology. These efforts produced valuable information about Liberian forests but failed to find a convincing second specimen. The absence became increasingly difficult to explain.[African Bird Club]africanbirdclub.org2012 Liberian GreenbulAfrican Bird ClubLiberian Greenbul expedition 2013 Final report December…by B Phalan · 2013 · Cited by 5 — The Liberian Greenbul was d…

A species can certainly be elusive, but decades without confirmation raised an uncomfortable possibility: perhaps the original specimen represented an unusual individual rather than an undiscovered species.

How DNA Reclassified the Mystery Bird

The decisive breakthrough came when researchers extracted DNA from the preserved specimen and compared it with genetic material from related greenbul species. Advances in molecular biology allowed scientists to test questions that earlier taxonomists could address only through physical appearance.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Taxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul PhyllastrephusTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…July 12, 2017 — 5 Jul 2017 — The Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…Published: July 12, 2017

The results were striking. Analysis of multiple mitochondrial and nuclear genes showed that the Liberian Greenbul did not form a distinct genetic lineage. Instead, its DNA fell comfortably within the normal variation of the Icterine Greenbul, a common rainforest species found across much of West and Central Africa. Researchers also found no evidence that the bird was a hybrid between different species.[FAO AGRIS]agris.fao.orgFAO AGRISTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…by JM Collinson · 2018 · Cited by 8 — Sequence analysis of three mit…

The most likely explanation became that the specimen was an Icterine Greenbul with an unusual plumage condition. Scientists suggested that the distinctive wing spots may have resulted from an abnormality during feather growth, potentially linked to nutritional stress or another developmental factor. In other words, the feature that originally seemed diagnostic of a new species may have been a rare individual variation.[University of Aberdeen]abdn.ac.ukUniversity of AberdeenRare songbird may never have existed | News5 Oct 2017 — Now DNA analysis by experts at the University of Aberdeen h…

Following publication of the genetic evidence in 2017, major taxonomic authorities stopped recognising the Liberian Greenbul as a valid species. It became a synonym of the Icterine Greenbul rather than a separate bird.[BirdLife DataZone]datazone.birdlife.orgBirdLife DataZoneIcterine Greenbul Phyllastrephus icterinus Species FactsheetThe taxon 'Liberian Greenbul', previously recognized as a sp…

Was It a Hoax, a Mistake, or Something Else?

The Liberian Greenbul does not fit the classic pattern of a hoax. There is no evidence that anyone fabricated a specimen, forged data, or deliberately misled other researchers. The bird itself was real. The mistake lay in interpreting what it represented.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Taxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul PhyllastrephusTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…July 12, 2017 — 5 Jul 2017 — The Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…Published: July 12, 2017

That distinction is important because science often advances through provisional conclusions. Taxonomists in the 1980s worked with the best evidence available: a distinctive specimen from a poorly known region. Their classification was testable, and later researchers tested it. When stronger evidence emerged, the classification changed.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Taxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul PhyllastrephusTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…July 12, 2017 — 5 Jul 2017 — The Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…Published: July 12, 2017

The case therefore belongs to the broader history of scientific claims later overturned by improved methods. Rather than exposing fraud, DNA analysis exposed the limits of relying on appearance alone.

Why the Story Still Matters

The Liberian Greenbul remains memorable because it reverses a familiar conservation story. Usually, DNA testing reveals that apparently similar populations are actually separate species. Here, genetics produced the opposite result: a famous rarity disappeared because it was not distinct enough.[Smithsonian Magazine]smithsonianmag.comelusive songbird species likely never existed 180965154Smithsonian MagazineThe Elusive Songbird Species That Likely Never Existed10 Oct 2017 — After fruitless hunts for a Liberian songbird, DN…

The episode also highlights the importance of preserving specimens in museum collections. Without the original bird collected in Liberia, modern genetic analysis would have been impossible. The specimen allowed a decades-old scientific question to be revisited with entirely new techniques.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Taxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul PhyllastrephusTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…July 12, 2017 — 5 Jul 2017 — The Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…Published: July 12, 2017

Within Liberia’s wider landscape of disputed stories and revised narratives, the Liberian Greenbul stands out as a case where the correction came not from exposing deception but from improving evidence. A bird once celebrated as one of Africa’s rarest species ultimately became something more ordinary: a common greenbul wearing an exceptionally misleading set of feathers.[FAO AGRIS]agris.fao.orgFAO AGRISTaxonomic status of the Liberian Greenbul Phyllastrephus…by JM Collinson · 2018 · Cited by 8 — Sequence analysis of three mit…
