Which Maltese Mysteries Survive the Evidence?

Malta’s best-known hoaxes are not a neat collection of deliberate frauds. They are a mixture of archaeological sensationalism, tourist legend, wartime mythmaking, religious claims and modern online impersonation.

Introduction

These stories matter because the authentic history is already extraordinary. The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a complex prehistoric burial monument; Malta’s rock-cut tracks remain an archaeological problem; and the island endured a devastating siege during the Second World War. Fakery thrives not because the real past is dull, but because uncertainty is easily converted into mystery, certainty and profit.[heritagemalta.mt]heritagemalta.mtHeritage MaltaĦal Saflieni HypogeumThe site yielded a wealth of archaeological material, including pottery, human bones, personal ornamen…

The Hypogeum’s missing skulls and vanished children

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground complex cut into limestone during Malta’s Neolithic period, has generated the country’s most persistent archaeological legends. Genuine excavations uncovered pottery, ornaments, figurines and large quantities of human bone. Early curator Themistocles Zammit described a small number of measurable skulls as belonging to a “long-headed type”, using the racial classification language common among early twentieth-century researchers. Later writers transformed that limited observation into claims about unnaturally elongated heads, alien ancestry, a lost priestly caste or a previously unknown human race.[Heritage Malta]heritagemalta.mtdebunking urban legends the hypogeum mythsHeritage MaltaDebunking Urban Legends -The Hypogeum Myths10 Dec 2020 — One myth concerns the discovery of eleven skulls which were discov…

The disappearance of several skulls from public view made the tale more persuasive. Six fragmented specimens were removed from display when Malta’s National Museum of Archaeology closed for refurbishment in 1995. Their absence was then presented online as evidence that officials had hidden inconvenient discoveries. Heritage Malta says the explanation was conservation and exhibition policy, not suppression: the skulls were retained in the national collection, studied and later displayed again. The agency states that they are not unusually elongated when compared with normal human variation, and one specimen has also been exhibited at the Hypogeum itself.[Heritage Malta]heritagemalta.mtdebunking urban legends the hypogeum mythsHeritage MaltaDebunking Urban Legends -The Hypogeum Myths10 Dec 2020 — One myth concerns the discovery of eleven skulls which were discov…

There is a kernel of truth beneath the exaggeration. The prehistoric skulls were generally long in proportion to their width, a normal anatomical category known as dolichocephaly. That does not mean they were artificially stretched, non-human or evidence of migration from some speculative lost civilisation. Academic studies have described variation among the remains, including disease and possible secondary burial practices, without identifying anything that requires an extraordinary explanation.[L-Università ta' Malta]um.edu.mtIssue 1 2000 Anthropomorphology of Classical skulls from MaltaHypogeum Prehistoric skulls. Hypogeum…

A darker story claims that a party of schoolchildren entered a hidden Hypogeum passage and disappeared, after which the tunnels were sealed. Versions add trapped voices, underground monsters or an institutional cover-up. No reliable contemporary record supports the episode. The tale appears in sensational retellings alongside inflated claims about tens of thousands of sacrificial victims, but not in the archaeological documentation of the site. Its survival illustrates a familiar hoax mechanism: a real place with restricted access, fragile remains and closed passages provides enough genuine secrecy for invented details to feel plausible.[The Malta Independent]independent.com.mtThe Mystery of the Hypogeum 65879The Mystery of the Hypogeum 65879

The Hypogeum legends are therefore not one organised deception. They developed through selective quotation, outdated racial terminology, missing context and repeated online embellishment. Museums have responded by putting the disputed objects on view and explaining how archaeological interpretation changed. That is more effective than merely labelling the story nonsense, because it shows precisely which real facts were stretched into fantasy.[Heritage Malta]heritagemalta.mtFrequent requests are received to see the “elongated skulls”Heritage MaltaThe Hypogeum skulls on display at the National Museum…The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum skulls, are currently on display at the…

Did aliens make Malta’s cart ruts?

Across Malta and Gozo, pairs of grooves run through exposed limestone, sometimes crossing one another like railway points and occasionally continuing towards the modern shoreline. Their date and exact purpose remain debated. That uncertainty has encouraged claims that they were made by extraterrestrial vehicles, prehistoric aircraft or an advanced civilisation destroyed when sea levels rose. Erich von Däniken helped popularise the alien interpretation by presenting the Maltese tracks as possible evidence of ancient visitors.[sciencedirect.com]sciencedirect.comThis suggests a coherence to them in terms of age, function, and modification.Read more…

The alien theory does not arise from positive evidence. It arises from treating incomplete archaeological knowledge as proof that ordinary explanations have failed. Researchers have proposed repeated vehicle traffic, wooden wheels cutting into wet limestone, deliberately carved tracks, transport sledges and even agricultural functions. None has won universal agreement, but all begin with physical processes, landscape use and comparison with similar tracks elsewhere in the Mediterranean. Recent morphological work found substantial standardisation in the Maltese grooves, suggesting a related age, function or process of modification rather than random marks left by exotic machines.[sciencedirect.com]sciencedirect.comThis suggests a coherence to them in terms of age, function, and modification.Read more…

A geomorphological explanation proposes that wheeled traffic first compressed or removed soil, after which wheels repeatedly followed the same exposed route. Maltese limestone becomes considerably weaker when wet, allowing grooves to deepen under continued use. Other scholars dispute whether wheels alone can explain every feature, particularly abrupt changes, branching tracks and examples on steep ground. That continuing disagreement is important: the honest conclusion is not that the mystery has been solved, but that uncertainty does not validate aliens or Atlantis.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaMisraħ Għar il-KbirMisraħ Għar il-Kbir

Tracks near the coast are often presented as proof that they were created before a catastrophic rise in the sea. Yet a groove running into water does not by itself establish its age. Coastlines change through erosion, quarrying, land movement, harbour works and more gradual sea-level shifts. Dating the tracks remains difficult because a channel cut into rock contains no organic material that can be directly radiocarbon-dated. The spectacular claim is therefore easier to state than the archaeological one, which must compare wear, geology, nearby remains and changing landscapes.[L-Università ta' Malta]um.edu.mtOpen source on edu.mt.

The cart-rut story sits on the boundary between pseudoscience and entertainment rather than straightforward fraud. Most visitors repeating the alien explanation are not consciously deceiving anyone. The distortion begins when a speculative possibility is advertised as suppressed fact, or when the absence of consensus is misrepresented as evidence that experts have no natural explanation at all.

St Paul’s anchors and the problem of sacred relics

The Acts of the Apostles describes Paul being shipwrecked on an island identified as Malta, but it does not provide an archaeological object that can be securely connected to the event. Tradition places the wreck in St Paul’s Bay. A rival theory promoted by American explorer Robert Cornuke argues that it occurred near St Thomas Bay and that four Roman-period anchors recovered there may have belonged to Paul’s ship. The story has circulated through books, religious media and organised tours as a possible discovery of biblical history.[lifeandland.org]lifeandland.orgOpen source on lifeandland.org.

The central weakness is provenance: the documented history of an object from its discovery onwards. Ancient anchors are not unique personal possessions, and several ships could have lost them in the same waters over centuries. Without an inscription, securely excavated shipwreck, datable cargo or other associated material, an anchor of broadly Roman type cannot be assigned to Paul’s vessel. Even accounts sympathetic to the theory concede that the objects cannot be conclusively identified.[Marsaskala.com]marsaskala.comSt Paul shipwreck Malta: Did It Happen at St Thomas' BaySt Paul shipwreck Malta: Did It Happen at St Thomas' Bay

Critics have also challenged Cornuke’s reconstruction of wind, currents and geography. His proposed location depends partly on a computer model and on reading the biblical narrative as a precise navigational record. Opponents argue that the model contains assumptions chosen to support St Thomas Bay and that sailors approaching the area might have recognised prominent coastal features, contrary to the passage’s statement that they did not recognise the land.[lifeandland.org]lifeandland.orgOpen source on lifeandland.org.

This does not prove that Paul was never shipwrecked in Malta, nor does it settle which bay best fits the text. It means only that the reported anchors do not establish the claim. The case shows how easily “consistent with the Roman period” becomes “from Paul’s ship” once religious interest, tourism and media-friendly discovery language converge.

Faith, Hope and Charity: a true defence turned into a legend

One of Malta’s most beloved Second World War stories says that the island initially faced the Italian air force with only three obsolete Gloster Sea Gladiators named Faith, Hope and Charity. The image is irresistible: three fragile biplanes, named after Christian virtues, protecting a besieged population against overwhelming odds. The surviving fuselage associated with Faith is displayed at Fort St Elmo and remains a powerful symbol of Maltese endurance.[Heritage Malta]heritagemalta.mtHeritage MaltaMalta's Role in World War IIDuring the opening days of the war, the limited force of obsolete Gloster Gladiator fighters, d…

The broad truth is that Malta’s fighter defence was dangerously weak and that Sea Gladiator pilots fought with courage. The misleading part is the tidy number three. More than three Gladiators were assembled or available, although serviceability problems meant that only a few might be flying at any one time. Aircraft were rotated, cannibalised for spare parts and joined by Hurricanes. The familiar names were attached to the story during or after the fighting, and accounts differ over exactly who first applied them and when.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaHal Far Fighter Flight RAFHal Far Fighter Flight RAF

Even institutional summaries sometimes repeat the simplified version. The Royal Air Force Museum describes three crated Gladiators being hurriedly assembled, while more detailed aircraft histories identify a larger pool of machines. Heritage Malta itself calls the fighters Faith, Hope and Charity while also describing them as a “limited force” rather than insisting that precisely three aircraft constituted the entire defence. This is how a national legend becomes durable: the compressed version is emotionally accurate even when its logistical details are not.[RAF Museum]rafmuseum.org.ukOpen source on rafmuseum.org.uk.

It would be misleading to call the story a cynical wartime hoax. It is better understood as patriotic mythmaking. Newspapers, official accounts, memoirs and later popular histories reduced a complicated sequence of aircraft availability into three memorable characters. The simplification gave Malta a ready-made symbol of courage and providential survival, while the surviving aircraft supplied a tangible relic around which the legend could gather.

Tourist legends that borrow the authority of antiquity

Gozo is often identified with Ogygia, the island where Homer’s Calypso detained Odysseus in the Odyssey. A cave overlooking Ramla Bay is promoted as Calypso’s Cave, and tourism material carefully describes the connection as a legend or allegation rather than an established fact. The epic provides no geographical coordinates capable of proving that Gozo is Ogygia, and several other Mediterranean islands have claimed the same association.[yippeemalta.com]yippeemalta.comYippee Malta Calypso Cave Gozo: The Legend, the Location, and MoreYippee Malta Calypso Cave Gozo: The Legend, the Location, and More

This is an invented or adopted tradition rather than a forged archaeological discovery. Its value lies in giving a real landscape a classical story that visitors can recognise. Problems arise only when the literary identification is presented as settled history or when the named cave is treated as a documented Homeric site. The distinction matters because folklore does not need to be literally true to be culturally meaningful.

Older interpretations of Malta’s megalithic temples followed a similar pattern. Seventeenth-century historian Giovanni Francesco Abela regarded the enormous stones at Ħaġar Qim as evidence that Malta’s earliest inhabitants had been giants. The idea made sense within a biblical and classical worldview in which monumental ruins were routinely attributed to physically enormous ancient peoples. Archaeology later replaced that explanation with evidence of Neolithic communities using organised labour, stone tools and accumulated technical knowledge.[Wikipedia]WikipediaĦaġar QimĦaġar Qim

Modern “giant builders” stories often preserve the old conclusion while discarding its historical setting. They point to the stones as if human construction were impossible, then move from giants to aliens or lost high technology. The rhetorical trick is consistent: underestimate ancient people, exaggerate the mystery and offer an extraordinary agent to bridge the gap.

How Maltese hoaxes work online

Malta’s contemporary hoax culture increasingly relies on impersonation rather than mysterious ruins. Scammers copy the branding of established news organisations, manipulate photographs and voices, and place public figures inside invented investment stories. In 2024, fact-checkers documented fake videos in which political figures appeared to promote a supposed cryptocurrency called MaltaCoin. The clips reused genuine footage, replaced the audio and linked to a fabricated news report styled to resemble the Times of Malta.[MEDDMO]meddmo.euVideos show public figures promoting Malta Coin, a newVideos show public figures promoting Malta Coin, a new

The false authority is assembled in layers. A recognisable politician supplies status; a cloned newspaper page supplies journalistic credibility; fabricated bank cheques or testimonials imply proof; and paid social-media adverts deliver the message to people who did not seek it out. A monitoring exercise in 2024 found at least 197 fraudulent adverts posted in less than a week, many directing users to copied news sites.[MEDDMO]meddmo.euInside the scam posts flooding Maltese social mediaInside the scam posts flooding Maltese social media

Other schemes begin with harmless emotional bait. Posts about missing children, injured pensioners or abandoned animals attract shares and comments. Once a page has accumulated attention, its operators may alter the content or redirect users towards fake investments and data-harvesting sites. A widely circulated claim that an abandoned girl had been found in Sliema, for example, reused a photograph from a genuine police case in Texas.[Times of Malta]timesofmalta.comTimes of Malta Fact-check: Was this girl found abandoned in Sliema?Times of Malta Fact-check: Was this girl found abandoned in Sliema?

Artificial intelligence has made the same method cheaper. Audio deepfakes have imitated the voice of Malta’s prime minister to advertise fraudulent trading platforms, while networks of pages have published invented local “feel-good” stories about fishermen, shopkeepers and animals. Some appear designed mainly to harvest engagement rather than money, but they still blur the line between local reporting and synthetic fiction.[timesofmalta.com]timesofmalta.comTimes of Malta Fact-check: Latest AI scam mimics Robert Abela's voiceTimes of Malta Fact-check: Latest AI scam mimics Robert Abela's voice

A separate viral claim used a photograph of seaside baths in Malta to argue that sea-level rise must be a hoax because supposedly Roman structures remained at the same waterline after two millennia. The baths were actually built in the Victorian period, and specialists noted that a single photograph taken at one stage of the tide cannot measure long-term change. The episode repeated the older cart-rut pattern: an arresting Maltese image was detached from its date and physical context, then made to carry a conclusion it could not support.[Reuters]reuters.comSingle photo of Malta tidal baths is not proof sea level rises are a hoaxSingle photo of Malta tidal baths is not proof sea level rises are a hoax

What the stories reveal

Malta’s hoax history is held together less by national character than by the qualities of the islands themselves. A small territory contains prehistoric temples, catacombs, sacred traditions, military relics and dramatic coastal formations in unusual concentration. Genuine gaps in knowledge are unavoidable, especially where early excavations were poorly recorded, objects lack secure provenance or folklore predates modern scholarship.

The most successful false stories exploit one of four weaknesses:

  • An object disappears from public view, allowing conservation or storage to be recast as a cover-up.
  • Experts disagree, allowing uncertainty to be sold as proof of aliens, giants or suppressed history.
  • A complex event is simplified, turning many aircraft and changing circumstances into three named heroes.
  • Trusted branding is copied, allowing fake newspapers, public figures and emotional posts to lend credibility to scams.

The useful sceptical question is therefore not simply “Is this a hoax?” It is “What kind of claim is this?” Malta’s giants belong mainly to obsolete interpretation and folklore. Faith, Hope and Charity is a patriotic compression of real courage. The Hypogeum’s alien skulls are a modern legend built from old terminology and museum practices. Fake investment endorsements are deliberate commercial fraud. Treating all four as identical would obscure how deception actually works.

The deeper lesson is that debunking should preserve what is genuinely interesting. Removing aliens from the cart ruts does not make the tracks ordinary. Rejecting a lost race does not diminish the Hypogeum. Correcting the Gladiator story does not reduce the pilots’ bravery. Malta’s real past survives scrutiny; the hoaxes flourish when that past is stripped of uncertainty, context and human scale.
