In archaeology, context is often as important as the object itself. An artefact without a secure chain of custody can rarely support revolutionary historical conclusions. The Paraíba inscription failed that basic test.

Why the debate did not disappear

Although most specialists accepted the forgery diagnosis, the story never completely vanished. Part of the reason is that ancient transoceanic contact is not inherently impossible. Yet the Paraíba case demonstrates why professional archaeologists place such emphasis on excavation records, provenance and independent verification.
