Introduction

Few stories about North Korea have travelled further than the supposed discovery of a unicorn lair and the claim that Kim Jong-il shot eleven holes-in-one during a single round of golf. They are often repeated as examples of absurd state propaganda. Yet the evidence behind both stories is more complicated than the popular versions suggest.

That does not mean North Korean state media are reliable. Rather, these cases show how mistranslation, selective reporting, repetition and embellishment can transform a dubious claim into a global legend. The most famous versions of both stories are not necessarily the versions that appeared first. In some cases, the tale that survives today says as much about foreign media and audience expectations as it does about North Korea itself.[The Guardian]theguardian.comnorth koreaThe GuardianUnicorn lair 'discovery' blamed partly on mistranslation5 Dec 2012 — Agency said it reconfirmed the lair of one of the unicor…

Did North Korea Really Claim These Things?

The short answer is: partly, but not in the way the stories are usually told.

North Korean institutions did publish reports that later became famous. However, the claims were often narrower, more ambiguous or more culturally specific than the versions that spread internationally. Once a sensational interpretation appeared, it was copied across newspapers, television programmes, blogs and social media, frequently without reference to the original text.

This pattern matters because North Korea presents a difficult reporting environment. Reliable information is scarce, official statements are heavily politicised, and many readers already expect bizarre behaviour from the regime. In such conditions, extraordinary stories can spread with remarkably little scrutiny.

What the Unicorn Lair Report Actually Said

In late 2012, North Korea’s official news agency reported that archaeologists had “reconfirmed” a site associated with King Tongmyong, the legendary founder of the ancient kingdom of Koguryo. English-language reports quickly condensed this into the claim that North Korea had discovered a “unicorn lair”.[The Atlantic]theatlantic.comnorth korea says they unearthed unicorn lairThe AtlanticNorth Korea Has Found a Secret Unicorn Lair, Apparently30 Nov 2012 — "Archaeologists of the History Institute of the DPRK Aca…

The resulting headlines created the impression that North Korean scientists were attempting to prove that unicorns existed. That interpretation spread rapidly because it seemed perfectly suited to existing stereotypes about the country.[Kera News]keranews.orgThere's no word whether the unicorn that lived in the lair was this cuteKera NewsNorth Korea Says Its Archaeologists Discovered A 'Unicorn…Nov 30, 2012 — North Korea Says Its Archaeologists Discovered A 'Un…

The original context was more mundane. The archaeological announcement concerned a site linked to a legendary ruler from Korean history and was intended to reinforce historical claims about Pyongyang’s status as an ancient capital. The report referred to a creature associated with traditional legends surrounding Tongmyong rather than presenting scientific evidence for a living mythical animal.[Arab News]arabnews.comArab News NKorean 'unicorn' claim lost in translationDec 8, 2012 — The KCNA item was reported by sections of the foreign media as a claim by North K…

A further complication emerged when Korean speakers examined the original text. Several analysts argued that the English-language rendering had translated a term closer to a kirin or qilin—a mythical creature from East Asian tradition—into the simpler but culturally misleading word “unicorn”. The result was a translation that technically pointed to a legendary beast but encouraged Western readers to imagine a horse with a magical horn from European fairy tales.[PIIE]piie.comunicorns dont exist kirins doUnicorns don't exist, but Kirins do9 Dec 2012 — It has been confirmed that there was actually no mention of unicorns in the article…

This does not transform the report into rigorous archaeology. The announcement still linked a physical location to a legendary figure. But it is significantly different from the popular claim that North Korea officially proved the existence of unicorns.[Arab News]arabnews.comArab News NKorean 'unicorn' claim lost in translationDec 8, 2012 — The KCNA item was reported by sections of the foreign media as a claim by North K…

How Five Holes-in-One Became Eleven

The golf story followed a different path.

For years, international media repeated the claim that Kim Jong-il played golf for the first time and scored eleven holes-in-one in a single round while shooting an impossible score of 38 under par. The story became a staple of documentaries, newspaper features and late-night comedy.[ESPN]espn.comOpen source on espn.com.

Yet the trail behind the claim is surprisingly messy.

Accounts connected to the Pyongyang Golf Course indicate that an earlier version of the story involved five holes-in-one rather than eleven. Even that would be an astonishing achievement, but it is notably less fantastic than the version that eventually conquered the internet. Later retellings added extra details, including the assertion that it was Kim’s first-ever round and that numerous bodyguards witnessed the feat. Researchers tracing the story have found it difficult to determine exactly when the number rose from five to eleven or whether the most extreme version originated inside North Korea or emerged through repeated foreign retellings.[Wikipedia]WikipediaPyongyang Golf CoursePyongyang Golf Course

The mathematics illustrate why the story attracted attention. Even highly skilled professional golfers rarely record a single hole-in-one. Two in one round are exceptionally rare. Eleven would belong not merely outside normal sporting achievement but outside anything ever documented in golf history.[Wikipedia]WikipediaHole in oneHole in one

Another wrinkle appeared when later explanations suggested that some confusion may have arisen from score-recording methods and reporting practices. Such explanations do not make the celebrated score plausible, but they highlight how difficult it is to separate the original claim from decades of retelling and embellishment.[Wikipedia]WikipediaPyongyang Golf CoursePyongyang Golf Course

The result is a familiar pattern: a dubious story becomes a famous story, and the famous version eventually overshadows whatever was actually said first.

Why Implausible Stories Survive Without Original Evidence

The unicorn and golf legends endure because they satisfy expectations.

Readers already know that North Korea maintains an extensive personality cult around its leaders and carefully manages historical narratives. As a result, claims that would be dismissed immediately elsewhere often seem believable when attached to North Korea. Genuine examples of political mythmaking make fabricated or exaggerated examples easier to accept. This creates fertile ground for stories that are weakly sourced but emotionally convincing.

Several mechanisms help such stories survive:

  • Translation shortcuts can turn culturally specific legends into apparently ridiculous claims.
  • Repeated citation creates an illusion of evidence even when later articles simply copy earlier ones.
  • Loss of original sources makes verification difficult.
  • Humour and satire encourage circulation without fact-checking.
  • Confirmation bias leads audiences to accept stories that fit an existing image of the country.[theguardian.com]theguardian.comnorth koreaThe GuardianUnicorn lair 'discovery' blamed partly on mistranslation5 Dec 2012 — Agency said it reconfirmed the lair of one of the unicor…

Once a story becomes part of popular culture, correcting it is surprisingly hard. A headline announcing that North Korea has “found a unicorn lair” is memorable. A detailed explanation about ancient Korean legends, translation choices and archaeological symbolism is not.

What These Cases Reveal

The unicorn and golf stories are useful not because they prove North Korean propaganda is harmless or because they entirely exonerate state media. Rather, they demonstrate how information can become distorted as it crosses linguistic, cultural and political boundaries.

In both cases, there was a real underlying report or claim. In both cases, the version remembered by millions of people became more dramatic than the available evidence supports. The unicorn story shifted from a claim about a legendary historical site to a supposed proof of mythical animals. The golf story evolved from an already extraordinary sporting boast into an almost supernatural feat.[arabnews.com]arabnews.comArab News NKorean 'unicorn' claim lost in translationDec 8, 2012 — The KCNA item was reported by sections of the foreign media as a claim by North K…

These episodes occupy an unusual place in the history of North Korean misinformation. They are not straightforward government hoaxes, nor are they entirely foreign inventions. Instead, they sit in the murky territory where propaganda, translation, journalism, humour and repetition interact. That ambiguity is precisely why they continue to be cited whenever people ask whether North Korea really claimed such astonishing things.
